There are many
messages about HIV/AIDS shared in our communities through magazines,
newspapers, television, and radio. We might not always agree on who is
sharing these messages and what the messages really are, but we do have
the power and the options of:
- Controlling which ones have the most influence.
- Supporting the people behind the messages that are shared.
- Becoming more proactive with our combined voices.
- Utilizing the media that relate to our situations and share our
concerns.

First of all,I love your blog.It inspires me.I felt the reason to respond because as anH.I.V. positive black man,I would rather see a person whom I can identify with in these ads rather some actor who has never been truly affected by this epidemic. It really makes me respect a person when they are known to be popula in anindustry that evolves around having sex....protected and unprotected. Thanks for this post....
ReplyDeleteAs always, a powerful message, my blogger brother. You know how important this cause is to me, I'm honored to follow in your footsteps here! Peace and love!
ReplyDeleteSo what? This might have been a feeble attempt by some Madison Ave type to reach a particular demographic, but the ultimate message remains loud and clear.
ReplyDelete"Sexy" sells; it's a fact of life.
MACKSON: FIRST OF ALL, WHAT AN ADMISSION! I HOPE YOU ARE IN A GOOD PLACE WITH YOUR STATUS, THANKS FOR FEELING FREE TO SHARE THAT WITH US. I WISH THAT I COULD DO MORE THAN JUST POST ENTRIES ON THIS BLOG FOR PERSONS THAT HAVE HIV.
ReplyDeleteROGER: I WONDERED WHAT YOUR TAKE ON THIS ENTRY WOULD BE, NOW I KNOW, NOW I KNOW.
ReplyDeleteJEFF: TOTALLY AGREE, I POSTED THIS BECAUSE I KNOW MANY THAT SAY MAYBE THE MESSAGE NEEDS TO CHANGE, MAYBE THE INSTRUMENTS PRESENTING THE MESSAGE NEED TO CHANGE, SO I THOUGHT I'D ASK.
ReplyDeleteSince HIV/AIDS disproportionately affects African-Americans, we need more education in the African-American Community to combat the prejudice, ignorance and superstition.
ReplyDeleteThe messages are NOT reaching those affected the most by the disease. We need more black celebrities, rappers, sportsmen to come out or speak out against unprotected sex and getting tested and taking their sexual health into their own hands.
As someone said above, "sexy sells". Our society continues to be grossly irresponsible in throwing around images of sexuality without the responsibility that should accompany it.
THOMAS: YOU HAD ME NODDING MY HEADING SAYING YES, WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THE GETTING MORE BLACK CELEBS OUT THERE TALKING ABOUT THIS DISEASE?
ReplyDeleteHere we are working dilgently to bring the message to our young people, in fact I was just at a mmeeting last night addressing this issue.
ReplyDeleteWe are cretaing posters for public transportation and other venues. Public speaking and media attention has helped a great deal, now making sure my young brothas and sistahs are projected in a good way through pictures and stories.
CHET: SO THE MESSAGE ISN'T LOST ON YOU HUH?
