What does it mean to be out? Of course, the process of coming out starts with understanding and accepting your sexuality, but does being out involve telling anyone other than yourself?
Do you have to become your own tabloid with your sexuality written in bold for everyone to see? Or is a part of being out sharing that side of you?

Good question. I'm under the impression that coming out means: Beyond the limits of concealment, publicity and openess.
ReplyDeleteI strongly feel that announcing that you're out is on a need to know basis. I don't tell unless someone ask, but I do not hide it or try and conceal it.
I think the simplest definition of being out is not having the slightest bit of reservation, shame, or hesitation in answering yes with pride and confidence when asked "Are you gay?"
ReplyDeleteYes, great question, indeed! I believe being out is the freedom to express your individuality, to express yourself. I would not confine the matter to simply being gay, though. How about an "out" football player that likes poetry and classical music or an "out" thug who likes museums and ballet? Some parts of us are always stifled by social mores and expections. Being "out" gives us the space to express who we really are.
ReplyDeleteGreat question. I guess it's not about carrying a sign, but handling it as any other part of your privacy.
ReplyDeleteEveryone is out, the world thinks you r out when you tell em your business.
ReplyDeleteComing out to me is confirming to someone else what you already know about yourself. Just letting them know who you are and where you are in life.
ReplyDeleteI would say when you are YOU, then you are out.Whatever YOU maybe.
