I think more pressing is the issue of "can civilization survive with God?" in view of the fact that religion has caused nothing but misery and division through all of recorded history.

Religion is man made, do I feel it casuses division...hmm sure. Misery? that is objective to the religion and to people, who choose to live their life that way...they're many who are not miserable.
God is the most lied on figure, in history. Everyone wants to put stuff on God, that isn't true. Don't put God in the middle of Misery and division.
So all in all my answer is No...things would be a lot worse without God.
