¿DOES THE BIBLE DEAL WITH MODERN DAY HOMOSEUALITY?

As a believer of monogamous AND stable relationship of SAME-SEX individuals, I believe that this we did exist in ancient times. However, due to the fact that in most ancient societies the general rule was that sexual activity was strongly encouraged to be limited to and concentrated on conceiving and bearing offspring in order to ensure the community’s survival and growth.  In those times most people understood that male seed was actually for the SOLE purpose of furthering mankind. Back then men thought that women had NOTHING to do with the birth, except the incubation.  So saving the male seed or semen in order to procreate was critically important in their minds. And under the provisions of the ancient Old Testament, it was considered ritually impure to participate in any act like homosexual anal intercourse that was a misuse or waste of male seed. Therefore living situations and the resulting sexual relations were restricted as much as possible to just opposite-sex unions that could produce children. So the idea of two same sex individuals living together as a couple would have been highly unlikely in that atmosphere. Nonetheless, I know of NO suggestion in the texts that relationships did OR did not exist between SAME-SEX ADULTS. However, ancient texts were written by men of the upper classes who usually had no interest in recording what was actually going on. THEREFORE I ASK, DOES THE BIBLE DEAL WITH MODERN DAY HOMOSEUALITY?

  1. Well, also, think about the context in which the bible was written. The jewish philosophers that wrote the OT were so vehemently persucuted by the Romans. Monotheism in that time was relegated to small, fringe groups, angry at the majority in power. A lot of the OT was written to counter what those early Christians saw as the excesses of the Roman empire, homosexuality being one of them. if you were being oppressed and killed off by a majority group, you would have done the same thing. They made the cross, a symbol of death, into their main symbol, and one of peace. There is a beauty in that but also shows again, the influence that the Romans had in the development of Christianity.

  3. No. And to take the Bible word by word is plainly stupid.

  4. The Bible was written with a specific point of view in mind, the Jewish point of view. I always say he who writes the story gets to be the hero and can decide who the enemy is.

I like to urge people to recall that we are all human and subject to frailty, compromise and even ugliness. Some of this is recorded in the Bible by the Jews, it's not all pretty.

But I agree with ExaminedLife. Abraham lived among the Chaldeans before he organized his group. Christians and Jews would be horrified if they acknowledged the degree and extent to which they owe much of their philosophy to "pagans". The Jews sought to distance themselves from their excesses as Examined says above, in an effort to "fit" themselves to their lifestyel.

  5. Right. I think to take it word for word is crazy. Read between the lines is what people been doing since the start of time.

  6. Very thought provoking, as usual. I've gone around and around in my head with this question, but now, ultimately, I don't care.

  7. No the Bible doesn't even begin to touch on that of the homosexual. One must read the Bible and take the passages in various contents not word by word.

  9. I read this post. And I thought about it for a while. And I didn't know how to answer your question. I thought: 'what kind of educated answer can I come up with?'. But I couldn't think of any.

But I thought about it some more. In reference to your question: 'does the bible deal with modern day sexuality?', I have not see any specific references to same-sex individuals living as couples.

But I also don't think that the bible deals with human relationships per se. I think the bible is MAINLY a book that guides people on what they are supposed to do in order to live their lives as God had intended and it is meant to teach us about God. Not really to address the question you are asking.
