¿ALL THINGS IN MODERATION...RIGHT?

So this headline grabbed my attention the other day…ORGANIC FOOD HAS NO NUTRITIONAL OR HEALTH BENEFITS OVER ORDINARY FOOD, according to a major study published July 29, 2009.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine said consumers were paying higher prices for organic food because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007.

A systematic review of 162 scientific papers published in the scientific literature over the last 50 years, however, found there was no significant difference.

"A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance," said Alan Dangour, one of the report's authors.

"Our review indicates that there is currently no evidence to support the selection of organically over conventionally produced foods on the basis of nutritional superiority."

The results of research, which was commissioned by the British government's Food Standards Agency, were published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Sales of organic food have fallen in some markets, including Britain, as recession has led consumers to cut back on purchases.

The Soil Association said in April that growth in sales of organic products in Britain slowed to just 1.7 percent in 2008, well below the average annual growth rate of 26 percent over the last decade, following a plunge in demand at the end of the year.

  3. It almost makes me glad that I didn't get into the Organic craze. I bet there's still people that will still pay the extra dollars for the Organic logo.

  4. Whenever I come across a "study" I have learned to ask certain questions, i.e., who paid for the study, what interest do they have in the result, what steps were taken to protect the integrity of the study and what's their angle or reason for doing the study in the first place?

Producers are increasingly doing funky things with our food and one can scarecly be sure what it is we are receiving and how it is produced. Whether it's fruits that have been gased to make the color look ripe when in fact the fruit is anything but or the chemicals and treatments the food goes through when its grown, or genetically produced foods, I think there is a real need for truth and honesty in how our food is being produced/handled.

I think the organic movement came about in response to the funky stuff being done to foods. Something got lost in the shuffle, though. It would seem to me that if the pesticides and chemicals were not being used, the food should have been cheaper to produce.

  5. People can live & eat as healthy as they can, only to find that like Joe Jackson (the Brit singer, not MJ's pops) once sang: "Everything Gives You cancer."

    One.

  6. So Brits can not eat organics? Mmmmhmmm I see. Times are indeed hard. Unless we literally know what is exactly in all the food, we are stuck trusting those that produce it. Thats the type of world we live in.

  7. To "piggyback" on what Thomas said, the results of the study were done by an independent company that may have had reason to give the results they did...their results may have been biased. It seems to me that foods that are produced without pesticides would just naturally be better for consumption. If you don't already think about the things that you put in your body, this topic will make you think twice.

  9. Well the bottom line is that you are what you eat and eating in moderation and of course right and balanced diet is the key to healthy body and healthy mind. Organic or no organic, just eat well, exercise well, keep fit and above do not throw foods away for there are many families in Asia and Africa that could eat that food you are throwing away.
