¿IT’S ME, NOT YOU?

Isn't it strange how most of us take life for granted when we hear the words THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU? Be it a warning against a deadly disease, in impending natural disaster OR an act of crime, we humans don’t take interest in safeguarding ourselves until these elements come knocking @ our door. Why is that? Are we just too carried away with the details of our PERFECT lives to notice that as long as we aren’t dead, life can and will happen to us? It is as if we are NOT who we, but what we do instead…And as a result of this we STRONGLY identify with a perception that will ultimately destroy us. However, life isn’t defined by the things we avoid, it is defined by how we anticipate AND react to unforeseeable. Isn’t it foolhardy to take a message that meant for each and every one of us and assumed that it meant for you and NOT for me? What do you think?

  1. I think the reason we take things for granted is because we are complacent or have a 'don't care' attitude. We'll go about our business, half-listening or not listening at all and not really giving a tinker's cuss (or whatever people say).

Something drastic needs to happen before we can get up, or haul our head out of that sand where it's been buried. We first want to go 'Oh!?'. Other than that, it's business as usual.

  2. I think you are absolutely right! We need to think about each other more and take care of each other. We need to think ahead and plan for our future. What happened to stop us from doing this. I'm unsure of the answer.

I posted something very similiar to what you are talking about today. It was written by me but I think it's a start. A start in African Americans taking pride in who we are and who we can become again.

  5. I think we just don't think about these things because we get so use to it being in our lives.

  6. First, good post!
It falls into people not praying and going to church until a crisis arrives then they practically live in the church and pray through the day and ask God for forgiveness.

I too think people become so absorbed and concentrated on their lives that they remove themselves from the equation and it becomes "they" vs. "we". It shouldn't be this way but unfortunately it is. At one time or another everyone goes through this patch, it's just human nature. The correct thing would be to become more conscious of it and realize that what affects "them" can also affect "you".

  7. I think part of it comes from fear. Not everyone is selfish and uncaring about others, but the old "looking after me and mine" tends to come into place at times of hardship, and people are afraid to admit that they are not exempt... It goes both ways

  8. I have to speak on this because, well, lets just say I know first hand. From things happeneing to close family members and now me, I find myself wishing I had not done some thing and done others. However, I still have the opportunity at a full life. Funny i told some one. I prayed to GOD this prayer. God if you take me back to the day I effed up I will do better! Needless to say, I have not seen that day again. The saying is true whats does not kill you WILL make YOU STRONGER!

  9. The reason we take things for granted is because we try to look at the positive and ignore the negative. Think about it, if we spent our days worrying about things we couldnt prevent, we would also spend days trapped in our homes with no room for improvement. Life is a risk and it is up to you play the right game or lose.

  11. I feel that to be always 'on' is stressful and we can prepare for some things but we really can't prepare for everything. There are a few persons out there who are paranoid and try to anticipate everything - but I really don't see them as 'living'... Interesting debate to have though - but my opinion is that you can only be prepared @ a certain level and there are times when life does surprise us

  12. I try to live my life at best I can this often means taking heed to what transpires around me and being watchful, never say never.

GaytKeeper you are absolutely right one never seems to place himself in the other person's shoes until we have no shoes, if it happen to him it can happen to me, so therefore we must all be aware and take heed.

  13. There's a lot of truth in there. But I think, also, we can go exactly the other way, and over-empathise, catastrophise, until we're so weighed down by guilt and pain and a sense of awful impending doom that life almost doesn't seem worth living.

    That's what I think, anyway.

  14. Just simply taking things for granted. It's easier to watch someone go through something than it is for you to go through it yourself.
