THE WORM OF HOMOPHOBIA

There is a worm lying coiled in the heart of civilization, the worm of homophobia. Like the DNA that governs the genetic features of each individual human being, homophobia has controlled the evolutionary development of civilization. While interacting with many other factors of social life, it has ultimate control of societies that have been created or dominated by people ‘straight’ folks. This worm is an oppression that has sprung from uneven, unequal social development.

  1. People are not born homophobic, they learn that behavior. The way to end that bigoted learning cycle is to hold parents accountable for any homophobic actions of their children. Once parents realize they are liable, both criminal and civil, we'll probably begin to see a decrease in overt actions of hate. Unfortunately, homophobia, like cancer, will never completely disappear.

  2. GK- I dont know where you are getting this stuff from, but it sounds to me like you are in a very dark place right now.

IMHO, you are ascribing way too much of Society's or Civilization's ills to homophobia and the suppression of 'our people'. In all honesty, I seriously doubt that Straights think about us all that much since there are so many other minorities to hate concurrently.

As one double minority grouper to another, why are we dwelling on this issue? As civilizations go, I think we live in a fairly decent one; could be a lot better, but certainly could be a lot worse (and has).

Roger- Who is going to be in charge of determining what a parent can and cannot teach their own children and what would be considered a criminal act? Sounds like a police state to me and not somewhere you and I would ultimately be happy living in or accepted by for that matter.

  4. JEFF: PLEASE NOTE WHEN YOU SEE STUFF LIKE THIS ON MY BLOG I AM MERELY HOLDING UP A MIRROR. ALL I AM DOING IS PUTTING THINGS OUT FOR A DISCUSSION & WHERE I AM FROM, HOMOSEXUALITY IS #1. NOTHING GETS THE PEOPLE IN THE CARIBBEAN MORE HEATED THAN THE SUBJECT OF HOMOSEXUALITY.

  5. GK- I think that I can safely say that even considering the luck of my birth as a White, Middle Class America, my main preoccupation as well as that of the majority of your readers, no matter where they reside, is with job, food, housing and medical care. My being a Fag is the least of my problems.

I have travelled the Caribbean extensively over the years and my suspicion is that these preoccupations are also shared by the majority of Caribbeans, only moreso.

I am an avid reader of your blog and it is the only one to which I contribute. I respect what you have to say and look forward to your next post, but Jeez, dude, lighten it up once in a while? Tell us what you and Noel did to LOL today or what you did that was completely juvenile, really stoopid or totally "Gay".

If you havent laughed at least once today or you cant remember the last time you did, then I think we need to talk.

    "Dont worry, be happy"

  7. I would hate to disagree with other folks here, but in a lot of ways I agree with the post. If you look in politics today how long does it take before the "gay issues" are mentioned? Even here in Canada, where it is very laid back, in our last provincial election (Ontario) the opposition sent out bullshit propoganda that the current premier was trying to turn all the kids in school gay. It was stupid, sure, but it tried to cover up all other issues: economy, housing, taxes, who cares so long as the schools aren't turning your kids gay. It did not work, thankfully, but the fact that it was attempted goes to show how much it is still obsessed over.

  8. JAMIES: DON'T WORRY ABOUT DISAGREEING WITH ANYONE HERE, THIS IS A FREE ENVIRONMENT.

  9. People often forget our perception is skewed by our environment and experience, hence everyone here would be correct. Who are we to say what's important in someone else's life or experience?

And by the way, this is one the most versatile sights around!

  10. Although I'm like, super duper gay, I don't think people are necessarily "taught" to be homophobic.

When I approach it, not as just a stigma, but an actual phobia, I compare it to my own phobia: Achluophobia (fear of the dark).

I wasn't "taught" to fear the dark. But from age 2 to 21, I have a serious arrest against the dark. Hell, I can't even have a dark room in my peripheral.

If someone were truly homophobic, I could sympathize with them on the terms of it being an actual phobia.

But all the hate and ish that comes along with it, well... I've never said derogatory things to or about a dark room, so... there's no excuse there.

I just think there's a difference between being phobic, and just being scared. And using your nerves as a reason to justify your reservations on something you CLAIM you want nothing to do with, but are SO adamant on picket-signing a same-sex marriage, burning your gas to drive down a street slinging slurs, etc.

(Sorry for the redundancy and the run-on sentences, I'm just kinda pissed).
