  2. Life demands of us a pound of flesh and our soul. What we have to offer life are good works and a heart!

  3. And we all should aim at leaving this world a little better than we found it.

  4. ... and wake up each day with renewed hope...

Nobody said it was going to be easy or fair, but it's the only Life we got. I have been learning lately to look at the glass as half full instead of half empty.

My partner's elderly mother has Parkinson's disease and after 6 months of watching her steadily deteriorate and numerous trips to doctors and the hospital, we were finally able to get a diagnoses, appropriate meds and she has been in rehab for the past two weeks.

Mom had gotten to the point where she was barely able to function at all and required 24/7 assistance from a caregiver to perform even the most basic activities of daily living. She is getting progressively better in Rehab; she can walk 80 feet using a walker and with the support of her therapist. She can feed herself using built up utensils and is learning how to chew and swallow again. She can read the newspaper and turn the pages herself with her balled up right hand (due to Parkinson's), and yesterday she was able to back herself up from a standing position and seat herself in her wheelchair. We had a care conference yesterday and the plan is for Mom to have two to four more weeks of rehab and then go home a bit more able to perform her ADLs, but with continued 24/7 supervision and assistance. Chances are, Mom will never be able to wipe her own ass again.

Throughout these past 6 months, my partner and I have had to keep a smile pasted on our faces, be paragons of encouragement and hope and cheer Mom along as she relearns what every human learns by age 5. This is a heartbreaking process to watch and we cry alone in the privacy of our own home.

Also throughout this process, Mom has never complained once. She also has had a simping smile pasted on her face when we visit because she is first of all, A MOTHER and mothers never get sick and mothers never show pain.

As I said, Mom had a breakthrough yesterday, and though I had tears in my eyes, I clapped and shouted 'GOOD JOB, I'M SO PROUD OF YOU !!!!' Mom smiled in agreement but she also stared at me with old, tired eyes that expressed the humiliation and pain she deals with every day. I said to her,
"Don't look at what you CAN'T do, look at where you were two weeks ago and what you CAN do today... and isnt it a miracle !!!"

She nodded in agreement but I dont think she really believed me and I dont really know if I buy all this shit myself. However, when asked by one of her medical providers; 'HOW ARE YOU COPING, MOM ?', her reply was,"WE GO ON."

    Yes Mom, we go on.
