¿WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A MAN IN THIS DAY & AGE?

For most men, being real about their innermost feelings is something that just isn’t that easy to do. Almost from birth, we are flooded with “lessons” about what it means to be a man. We are taught to “suck it up,” that “real men don’t cry,” and that the “tougher” you are, surely that must equate to the depth of our masculinity.

With notions such as these so deeply rooted within the spirit of a man, it is no wonder that so many men have such a tremendous amount of difficulty in being vulnerable, open, and honest in the expression of their deepest emotions. I LOVE being in the company of men (for obvious reasons) and I can't help but wonder what the gay and straight men in my midst think it means to be a man in this day and age. So I ask you, what does being a man mean to you?

  1. Well to me being a man is more than masculinity and being a sports fanatic and fucking as many people in the ass or pussy as possible. I believe that being a man is taking charge and being up front. It's okay to show emotions. A man must be responsible and be able to accept his mistakes and learn from them.

  2. All of us are culturally programmed from birth to fullfill certain roles in society. A man is taught to be aggressive and dominant and a woman is taught to be passive and submissive. In our modern society, that traditional concept is no longer practical nor workable. What we have is an ever-growing population of dysfunctunal individuals within a society of misfits.

Personally, being a man means to be accountable for my actions and being responsible for my decisions. I need to step up and be myself and offer no apologies for being Deaf, gay nor a nudist. I stand proud as who I am and know that there are consequences for being honest about myself in a dishonest world. I am true to me and the world.

If I cry, it is tears of happiness or sorrow. If I fight, it is in defense of me and my values. If I laugh, it is a result of absurdity, humor or joy. If I compete, it is from striving to improve myself. If I compromise, it is out of respect and love, not fear nor intimidation.

At the end of the day, I am my own man. I am true to my beliefs and to myself.

  3. This has become quite the conundrum. I was taught the meaning of a man by my father and I try to live by that, but as of late society has thrown a wrench in the game and shyte is changing.

Respectful, honest, caring, dedicated, provider, family orientated and God fearing are some stronger characteristics of a man.
