¿REAL MEN WEAR PINK...RIGHT?

Yesterday I decided to wear a pink colored shirt to work and I QUICKLY learned how ignorant the human mind can be. My co-worker (God bless her heart) decided to ask me a personal question. And her question to me was why I would wear a PINK colored shirt? My response was because I can…she then said that she doesn’t think a man should wear a shirt this color and if he does then he more than likely is GAY. When she said that I laughed because her logic was SO off center; how sad is that this way of thinking exist in this world huh? PITY…Then she proceeded to question MY sexuality by asking if I am gay, to which I asked her if she was interested? To which she said that she wasn’t because she doesn’t date within the working environment (NOT because she is a married woman), but because she doesn’t believe in cooking AND taking a dump in the same place. I TOTALLY agree with her on that sentiment; however I can’t help think how an article of clothing would suggest that I am a HOMOSEXUAL? So does this mean that MASCULINITY ≠ A PINKSHIRT?

This proved to me that in today’s society we are WAY TOO consumed with MASCULINITY. I thought that ONLY beauty was in the eye of the beholder, I didn’t know that article of clothing made its way in there as well? This belief, this notion is NOTHING more than a perception that has NO result in anything other than our frames of reference. Hence the ENTIRE GENTRIFICATION comes down to image and NOTHING else? When are we going to learn that masculinity AND femininity are nothing more than a facade? I might hesitate to agree that sometimes we gay men and women causes persons like her to make assumptions about gender. I guess @ the end of the day I can say that she has PERFECTLY characterized what masculinity isn’t…Her take on what a man is about would be funny it weren’t SO scary. This lady has a son AND GOD only knows what he’ll grow to be, I can only hope that he doesn’t try to wear a pink shirt because it is OBVIOUS that his mother is wounded because she thinks that masculinity is something that a man wears.

  1. Yea its clearly a masculinity issue. I didn't care to wear anything pink for a loong time with the fear that I would be pointed out as gay. But if you really think about it, its the way society has raised us. From birth it was boys get blue and girls get pink. If that was inverted then well, you get the point lol.

  4. Hmmm... PINK SHIRT = GAY?

If I use your co-worker's logic, I guess I should double-check my young brother's sexuality because as far as we all know he's hetero, but he has no qualms wearing a pink shirt.

THE WAY THE HUMAN MIND CAN WORK SOMETIMES IS MIND BOGGLING. A GROWN UP PERSON THINKING LIKE YOUR CO-WORKER?

  10. She sounds like a willfully ignorant woman.

Ignorance is odious but forgivable ( because it is correctable.)

    Willful ignorance is unforgivable.

  11. *SIGHS* lol. The ignorance of some hetersexual women and their juxtapositions based off whos more masculine and who isnt. While it might be ingrained of this notion does not make it a legitimate argument. If isn't a pink shirt then it will a yellow shirt, or green or orange. lol. I'm glad you laughed and I loved how you responded to her. I love your mind bro.

  12. Some people are just so repulsively primitive in their thinking and reasoning. There really isn't anything I could have said to that either.

  13. Your co-worker sounds like she's from the dark ages. How old is she? I love it when a man wears pink. My heman husband won't wear the color, but my son does. When his father questioned him about his choice he said, "I know i'm a boy. Wearing pink doesn't change that."

  14. I agree with my compadres here...this lady is stuck on stupid. I mean really....Pink is the new black right? or was that Gay? LOL Anywho...what do you say to someone like that? Her thoughts and opinion likely will not change, no matter what. Sad. Keep wearing pink!

  16. THIS IS THE REASON Y HATRED AND HOMOPHOBIA WILL CONTINUE TO PERMEATE OUR SOCIETY. PEOPLE WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER ARE SO BLATANTLY IGNORANT. WE HAVE SUCH A LONG WAY TO GO WITH REGARDS TO DEALING WITH HOMOPHOBIA AND THE BIGOTRY THAT EXISTS.

  17. After wearing a pink shirt to work, a client -in the presence of about 30 other clients- suggested that men who wear pink shirts have sinister intentions. I continue to wear the shirt to this day.

  18. I think people automatically think pink is for little girls only although I have seen quite a few masculine men pull it off quite well. If youre going to wear it you have to wear it with confidence. Would you have a problem with carrying a pink umbrella? or wearing something pink? or does it make a difference? I personally wouldnt wear anything pink but I do Iphone and Ipod with pink covers and people try to make a big deal out that but I dont let it bother me. I think its kind of silly

  19. 1st off all that bitch is crazy to even come up to you talking that nonsense.

2nd, I think it's an indicator of your town. In ATL plenty of guys wear pink- with no attacks on their masculinity or sexuality. Yet out in the boondocks or less progressive areas, this type of shit goes on.

  20. Keep wearing your pink shirts. I find it liberating to be who I am and wear what I want without being concerned about the ignorant and constraining constructs of society. My partner, who used to be a teacher, had to correct one of the other teachers for telling the kids that boys shouldn't use pink crayons because those are for girls. What kinda fuckin example is that?????

  21. I support the PINK shirt lol... She's needs to get it together. The same thing happened to me last year @ my old job man. So I know what u mean.

  22. My favorite color is pink...lol. I own several pink shirts and I don't care what anyone thinks. Pink looks great with my complexion. heh.

This woman, and people like her, obviously struggle with homophobia to the point of complete and utter absurdity. Basically, gender is static to them. And if you deviate from the norm in any sense it activates a brain meltdown.

  23. I had a co-worker [guy] who hated whenever I wore a pink shirt. And I made a point to wear it @ least once a week and to inform him when I did
    It was a fun experience.
But Fat Joe wore a pink jump suit so now it's OK for the rest of us to wear pink
