IF ONLY YOU KNEW...

Sometimes, we may find ourselves wishing we knew what our lives are going to look like or what gifts and challenges are going to be presented to us in the coming months or years. We may want to know if the relationship we’re in now will go the distance or if our goals will be realized. Perhaps we feel like we need help making a decision and we want to know which choice will work out best. We may consult psychics, tarot cards, our dreams, and many other sources in the hopes of finding out what the future holds. Usually, at most, we may catch glimpses. And even though we think we would like to know the whole story in all its details, the truth is that we would probably be overwhelmed and exhausted if we knew everything that is going to happen to us. Just think of your life as you’ve lived it up to this point. If you are like most of us, you have probably done more and faced more than you could have ever imagined. If someone had told you as a child of all the jobs and relationships you would experience, along with each one’s inherent ups and downs, you would have become overwhelmed. With your head full of information about the future, you would have had a very hard time experiencing your life in the present moment, which is where everything actually happens. In many ways, not knowing what the future has in store brings out in us the qualities we need to grow. For example, it would have been difficult to commit yourself to certain people or projects if you knew they wouldn’t ultimately work out. Yet, it was through your commitment to see them through that you experienced the lessons you needed to grow. Looking back on your life, you would likely be hard pressed to say that anything in your past should not have happened. In fact, your most challenging experiences with their inevitable lessons may have ultimately brought you the greatest rewards. Not knowing the future keeps us just where we need to be…FULLY COMMITTED & IN THE PRESENT MOMENT…IF ONLY YOU KNEW…

  1. AGAIN,ANOTHER EXCELLENT POST!!!!!!!!! I AM THE SUM TOTAL OF ALL MY PAST EXPERIENCES AS THEY HAVE HELPED TO SHAPE THE PERSON I AM TODAY. SO WHILE WE ANTICIPATE AND PLAN FOR THE FUTURE ,LET US NOT LOSE SIGHT OF LIVING IN THE PRESENT.

  2. WHILE I AM A BIT CURIOUS ABOUT THE FUTURE AND WHAT IT HOLDS FOR ME, I DON'T THINK I WOULD WANT A GLIMPSE INTO IT AS THIS MAY CREATE ADDITIONAL STRESS, PRESSURE AND INFORMATION OVERLOAD.
THIS MAY CAUSE ME TO BE TOO PREOCCUPIED WITH TRYING TO AVOID ANY DISASTROUS OCCURRENCE OR TRYING TO ENSURE THAT POSITIVE OUTCOMES DO OCCUR. SO LIVE IN THE PRESENT WHILE YOU PLAN AND PREPARE FOR THE FUTURE!!!!!

  3. Kish, why did you have to talk about this issue now? It's 03:00pm on my side so my brain is tired. And making things worse, this is a rather tricky topic for me. I'm not really sure how to approach it. But let's see:

You say '...not knowing the future keeps us where we need to be, fully committed in the present...' that
'...we would probably be overwhelmed and exhausted if we knew everything that is going to happen to us'.

I'm not sure if you would rather not know anything at all or if you would not mind highlights of your future.

Would it be a problem if you came to know beforehand, who you were going to marry and how many children you would have; that there was a job waiting for you (maybe not details on the kind of job); that someone in your family was going to pass away even if you didn't know when.

Would it be a problem knowing this and would it be too much information?

You see I don't think that we as human beings have the power to change 'destiny'. That is if you knew in advance certain things, then you would attempt to try and change the course of your life. In fact, I doubt it very much that what you knew would occupy your mind on a daily basis.

What would probably happen is you would in most cases remember those details of your life that you 'pre-know' at the time that they come to pass.

For e.g. if you knew who you were going to marry, you would not think about such a person daily and maybe try to change destiny, but you will remember that you knew him beforehand the day that the two of you meet.

Trust me that it is not a bad thing at all to know the future. You still live perfectly in the present without being obsessed with what is coming. You'll think of it now and then as a remembrance but it does not affect how you live your present life.

But feel free to disagree with me.

  4. My take on this post is someone between Ossie and Shallotte. Knowing some of the things you wonder about (like deaths, marriage, kids, jobs, promotions, etc.) can be consoling to know in advance. However, I think knowing those things make you less willing to work for what it is that you want in life....since you know what's coming. I think it's important that we trust and believe that all things work out for the good....

We must live in the present and deal with today...tomorrow has its own issues. Knowing those issues or even the positive things will only keep you worrying and you'll never finish the current day.

    Tough issue......real tough....

  5. I think I would like a glipmse of the futre so long as i can manipulate it in the present.

To many of us are focused on today with our lives be it work relationship what have you.

And although what doesnt kill you will make you stronger if you have a map to happiness why not use it?

  6. SHALLOTTE – WHILE I SEE YOUR POINT I STILL HAVE TO SAY NOT KNOWING WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS KEEPS US IN A BETTER PLACE MENTALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. AS IT STANDS NOW WE DON’T HAVE THE POWER TO SEE OUR FUTURE ENDEVOURS & I FEEL THAT IS FOR A GREAT REASON…

  7. CLNMIKE – I THINK YOUR TAKE ON SEEING THE FUTURE IS AN INTRIGUING ONE, BUT HOW DO YOU STOP SOMEONE ELSE FROM MANIPULATING YOUR FUTURE SO THAT YOU CAN BE WHO THEY WANT YOU TO BE?

  10. Part of lifes beauty and its distress is the fact of impermanence and fear of the unknown. Good and bad can and does lie ahead, just the facts of life.

  12. True... Lord knows if I knew everything that was headed in my direction (I wouldn't have been overwhelmed) I would have written EVERYTHING down in chronological order -- according to date and time period. Wait... so then I'd have to disagree with the whole becoming better because in SOME ways, I've gotten stronger, but in reality... being put through what I've been put through has really hurt me. I don't see eye to eye with anyones optimism for life because of that. So yes... if only I COULD know, I'd be MUCH better off.

  13. Very intriguing blog. I agree that if we knew what the future holds it would be overwhelming, especially if we took a peak at world events.

The only advantage of looking into the future would be to somehow avoid the mistakes that one would make or make better decisions that lead up to that futuristic moment in order to change it.

  14. I think that if we did know the future about certain situations we would naturally want to change some things. I know that some of the things that i have been thru or i even know other people had been thru....if we knew that they were coming then we would take a different path. Some things we dont need to experience because they can taint us and make us into someone that ultimately we dont want to be.

  15. I have a dual opinion on this here goes:
I agree that not knowing helps us live the moment more effectively and I would have to say I prefer to have the experience and not know the outcome
But life isn't that way. For some reasons the universe still gives us clues & that's what helps us to avoid many errors and obviously those of us who follow our gut make better decisions than those who don't & then again there must be something said for those who are too conservative in their decisions and don't dare to take any risks.

Ultimately we would like to look back @ our lives and ever so briefly not regret any decision we may have made [good or bad] that brought us to the point we are now.

For some of us it is much easier than it is for others
